How to publish your first Christian book

You’ve finished the manuscript God put on your heart. Here is exactly what happens next — seven steps, in order, without the overwhelm.

Writing the book is the hard part — but for most first-time authors, it’s the part after writing that feels most confusing. Editing, formatting, ISBNs, Amazon accounts, covers, copyright… where do you even start?

The good news: publishing follows a predictable path. Here it is, step by step.

Step 1: Get an honest manuscript review

Before you spend a dollar on design or distribution, have a professional read your manuscript and tell you where it stands. A good manuscript evaluation maps your book’s strengths, its gaps, and the specific work it needs to become publishable. This one step prevents the most expensive mistake in self-publishing: polishing the outside of a book whose inside isn’t ready.

Step 2: Edit — then proofread

Editing and proofreading are different jobs, done in this order:

  • Content/line editing shapes the message — structure, clarity, flow, and voice.
  • Copy editing fixes grammar, consistency, and style.
  • Proofreading is the final pass on the formatted pages, catching what everything else missed.

A good editor protects your voice. If sample edits come back sounding like someone else wrote them, keep looking.

Step 3: Design the interior and the cover

Readers judge books by their covers — in about half a second, on a thumbnail the size of a postage stamp. Your cover needs to signal your genre and your message at a glance. The interior matters just as much: professional typesetting (margins, fonts, spacing, chapter openings) is the difference between a book that feels self-published and one that belongs on a shelf.

You’ll also need the “front matter”: title page, copyright page, dedication, preface or foreword, and your author bio.

Step 4: Get your ISBN and register your copyright

An ISBN is your book’s unique identifier — stores, libraries, and online retailers use it to find and order your title. Each format (paperback, hardcover, eBook) needs its own. You may also want Library of Congress registration and formal copyright registration, which strengthens your legal protection. We cover ISBNs in detail in What an ISBN is and why you need one.

Step 5: Publish on Amazon KDP

Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is where most first-time authors publish: it’s free to use, prints paperbacks on demand, and reaches the world’s largest book market. Setting it up properly means formatting your files to KDP’s specifications, pricing strategically, choosing the right categories and keywords, and configuring your royalty options — details that quietly decide how discoverable your book is.

Step 6: Plan the launch

A book launch doesn’t need to be complicated, but it should be intentional. Line up your church, small group, and personal network for launch-week reviews; reviews in the first weeks matter enormously for Amazon’s algorithm. Consider a launch event, a signing, or a giveaway that gets the book into hands.

Step 7: Keep marketing after launch week

Books are sold over months, not days. An author platform — a simple website, an email list, a consistent social presence — turns one book into a ministry and a career. Speaking engagements, podcast interviews, and word of mouth in faith communities remain the most effective marketing a Christian author has.

Every story matters and deserves to be told with excellence, faith, and heart.

Do you have to do all this alone?

No. Some authors handle every step themselves; most are happier — and end up with a better book — partnering with a team that does this every day. That’s exactly what our publishing packages are for: from $550 for manuscript-ready essentials to a complete done-for-you path that includes Amazon setup, marketing, and mentorship.
